3 BIG words: SANCTIFICATION

Last week at Bright Idea we looked at the first of 3 BIG words the Bible uses for how Jesus saves people past, present and future.

The first was JUSTIFICATION.  It means Christians can say, "Jesus has saved me from the punishment of sin."

The second one is SANCTIFICATION.  It means Christians can say, "Jesus is saving me from the practice of sin."

And we'll look at the third one next week.

Justification is a one time deal.  Sins forgiven by Jesus once and for all.  Sanctification on the other hand, is a life-long process of being changed by the Spirit of Jesus to become increasingly more like him.

Here's some verses from the Bible to help us reflect on this...

2 Corinthians 3:18
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Romans 6:6
We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Hebrews 10:14
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 6:1-4
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning, so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Always happy to chat more if you have any questions.  Next week we'll look at the third BIG word about how Jesus saves people in the future. :)

Next time we gather will be Sun 2nd Jun 11.30am upstairs at The Stable pizza restaurant on Westover Road, Bournemouth.  Come along and bring friends! :)

Meanwhile, check out this video from The Bible Project on Holiness, which has some relevant stuff to say on this idea of SANCTIFICATION...
