Psalm 63: Earnestly seeking

What do you get obsessed about?  A TV show?  A certain hobby?  An ambition you have?

What's actually WORTH being obsessed by?  Consumed by?  Overcome by?

For David, who wrote this psalm when he was in the desert, you might expect him to be obsessed by a longing for water and shelter.  And perhaps he was, but nowhere near as much as he was overcome by his longing for God himself.

Take a look at this video for an incredible example of the extreme happiness that comes from desperately longing for something and finally having that need met, knowing that it literally saves your life!  It's amazing and hilarious!

And then imagine needing God this much (more!) and finding him!  Maybe you don't need to imagine!

I won't add any explanation with this one as I don't think it needs it really but as you go through, see if you can imagine being this desperate for God and maybe pray these words if you can...

You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
I will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.
Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword
    and become food for jackals.
11 But the king will rejoice in God;
    all who swear by God will glory in him,
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.

And here's that song again by Tree63 that expresses this psalm so well.

And a little treat for anyone reading down this far...  I'm making punk songs again and they're the 15 psalms of ascent (Psalms 120-134) using the words of The Message Version of the Bible.  1 is already done, 14 to go.  I might start sharing them as they get finished.  Should be uplifting stuff that will bring a smile. :)
