Psalm 88: Desperately low

Have you ever been through such a low season where you honestly feel like there's no hope?

Who did you talk to about it?

Or maybe you're even going through a time like that right now.

Who are you talking to?

In this psalm we see someone at their lowest moment.  No sign of hope or anything positive here.  EXCEPT for the fact that all these honest words are being said TO GOD.

Have a read through and notice how this person is HONEST TO GOD - the name of our series in the psalms.  God can handle our honesty.  Even when we feel crap and just want to complain to him.  Better to talk to him than keep it to ourselves or dress up our prayers as if we're not at rock bottom.

Lord, you are the God who saves me;
    day and night I cry out to you.
May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.

I am overwhelmed with troubles
    and my life draws near to death.
I am counted among those who go down to the pit;
    I am like one without strength.
I am set apart with the dead,
    like the slain who lie in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
    who are cut off from your care.
You have put me in the lowest pit,
    in the darkest depths.
Your wrath lies heavily on me;
    you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.
You have taken from me my closest friends
    and have made me repulsive to them.
I am confined and cannot escape;
    my eyes are dim with grief.
I call to you, Lord, every day;
    I spread out my hands to you.
10 Do you show your wonders to the dead?
    Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11 Is your love declared in the grave,
    your faithfulness in Destruction?
12 Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,
    or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
13 But I cry to you for help, Lord;
    in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14 Why, Lord, do you reject me
    and hide your face from me?
15 From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;
    I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your terrors have destroyed me.
17 All day long they surround me like a flood;
    they have completely engulfed me.
18 You have taken from me friend and neighbour –
    darkness is my closest friend.

Someone once said about prayer:
Keep it simple
Keep it honest
Keep it going

That's what this person seems to be doing.

Why not try praying like that?

A friend of mine this week asked me how to start praying.  I gave him a very simple way: STOP and pray...

S = SORRY - Tell God how you've failed or fallen short and ask his forgiveness

T = THANK YOU - Thank God for every good gift you have that you did nothing to deserve

O = OTHERS - Focus on the needs of others you care about for a moment and ask God to help them

P = PLEASE - Then focus on your own needs.  Ask God for what you need and then trust him

My prayer for you is that you would know that you can talk to God in the best and worst of times.  Even when it feels like there's no hope.  It's always worth opening up to God and trusting him.  He loves you and he is with you!
