Where do animals go when they die?

This is a really interesting question.  We love our pets and when they die, it's one of the most sad things ever!

In the Bible's story of creation in Genesis, the first people are given responsibility alongside God to look after everything he created.  What an amazing privilege!

Looking after and enjoying animals is ONE part of the whole reason we've been made!

But the Bible says human beings are the MOST SPECIAL part of everything God made because we're the ONLY thing he created IN HIS IMAGE.

Genesis 1:26...

Then God said, “Let us make human beings so that they are like us. Let them rule over the fish in the seas and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the livestock and all the wild animals. And let them rule over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

Matthew 6:26...

[Jesus said] "Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?"

This is why, even though it's important to care for and enjoy animals, it's the lives of PEOPLE that God cares about the most.  He created us to be like him and in a special relationship with him.

This is why it's ok for us to EAT animals for food but not other people!

Acts 11:6-7...

I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth. There were also wild animals, reptiles and birds. Then I heard a voice speaking to me. ‘Get up, Peter,’ the voice said. ‘Kill and eat.’

Also if you want to be a vegetarian or vegan, that's fine too, but God doesn't say you have to!

And I think it's clear in the Bible that human beings are the only creatures made to LIVE FOREVER with God in heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:11...

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

John 3:16...

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

So I think when we say goodbye to our pets, it really is goodbye.  But will there be new animals in heaven?  That's another question! :)

Questions to talk about...

What's your favourite animal that God has made?  Why do you love it so much?

What's your favourite animal to eat (if you do eat them)?  How much do you know about where your food comes from and how it was treated?  Maybe you could visit a farm and find out more or ask your local butcher!  Did you know TODAY is OPEN FARM SUNDAY?

How do you feel about Jesus creating YOU in his image to be like him and to know him?  You're even more precious to God than all the animals he made!  What do you want to say to God about that?
