Why do we only have one day a week for celebrating God?

This is a great question.  Are Sundays somehow more special or more holy than the other days?  Or is every day equally special?

What do you think?

What do you think GOD thinks?

Let's see what he says in the Bible...

The story of creation at the start of the Bible says God made everything in 6 days and he rested on the 7th day.  Later on when God gives special laws for his people to live by, he gives them this law about resting one day a week...

Exodus 20:8-12...

“Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy. Do all your work in six days. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to honor the Lord your God. Do not do any work on that day. The same command applies to your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and your animals. It also applies to any outsiders who live in your towns. 11 In six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in them. But he rested on the seventh day. So the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

So God's people (Abraham's family who became the Israelites) were supposed to have one special day a week to rest from their normal work and to set it aside as a special "holy" day.

So one day a week to rest.  That makes sense.  We need rest don't we?!

But does this mean that this "rest day" day is more special or more for God than the other days of the week?

Later on in Romans chapter 14, the Bible talks about how some Christians (with weaker faith) thought one day a week was more special than the others but some other Christians (with stronger faith) believed all the days of the week were equally special.

What do you think it says the stronger-faith Christians should do?

Tell the weaker-faith Christians to get over it and grow up?

Make fun of them for not figuring it out yet?

No.  Here's what it says...

Romans 14...

1 Accept the person whose faith is weak. Don’t argue with them where you have differences of opinion...

One person considers one day to be more holy than another. Another person thinks all days are the same. Each of them should be absolutely sure in their own mind. Whoever thinks that one day is special does so to honor the Lord...

17 God’s kingdom is not about eating or drinking [some of them had different ideas about food too]. It is about doing what is right and having peace and joy. All this comes through the Holy Spirit. 18 Those who serve Christ in this way are pleasing to God. They are pleasing to people too.

19 So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build up one another...

22 Whatever you believe about these things, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the person who doesn’t feel guilty for what they do.

So...

It's important to rest at least one day every week so we don't work too hard and wear ourselves out!

And it's helpful to meet regularly with others (perhaps on our sabbath or rest day) who are journeying with Jesus to encourage one another and learn and worship together in special ways too.  That's why we gather once a month at the pizza restaurant (I wish it was every week - maybe one day!).

But also...

EVERY day should be special to God.

God's not good one day a week.  He's good EVERY day of the week!  So we shouldn't just celebrate and worship him one day a week.  We should worship him EVERY day of the week.

God doesn't just want our Sundays.  He wants US!
