Will God be able to stop us from destroying our planet?

The short answer to this one is easy peasy: Yes!

Of course God is powerful enough to stop us from destroying the planet.  Not only is he able to stop the destruction COMPLETELY ONE DAY, he's also able to stop us destroying it NOW by changing our hearts through Jesus TODAY.

It's not OUR planet anyway.  The Bible says...

Psalm 24:1-2

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

The earth is the LORD'S.  Sometimes people make big mistakes when it comes to how we treat the earth because they have some big mistakes in the way they think about our relationship to it...

Sometimes people think, "The earth is OURS".  So we can do whatever we want to it.  But this leads to us thinking TOO MUCH of ourselves.  If it's all OURS then we can waste things, use up resources and keep taking more and more from it until it's ruined.  Not good.  The earth is NOT ours.

Other people seem to think "We belong to the EARTH".  Like we're just particles the same as everything else in the universe and no more important or special than anything else.  But this leads to us thinking TOO LITTLE of ourselves.  If we belong to the EARTH then we have no right to anything at all.  Not good.  We do NOT belong to the earth.

But the Bible says "The earth is the LORD'S".  This helps us understand our proper place as human beings.  We're not the HIGHEST authority.  And we're not as LOW as worms.  We're UNIQUE HUMAN BEINGS, created by God in his image to know him, to be like him and to LOOK AFTER and RULE OVER all that he has made...

Genesis 1:27-28

So God created mankind in his own image,
    in the image of God he created them;
    male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’

We don't always do our job very well.  In fact, often we mistreat, waste or destroy things when we should be caring, recycling and creating things.  And sometimes we even treat other human beings in the same way!  We need God's forgiveness through Jesus!

What's the way forward?  2 things I think:

1. Let's REMEMBER who this place belongs to and TRUST JESUS for forgiveness.  We're like caretakers or stewards.  God is the Owner.  Everything is on LOAN to us.  One day we'll have to answer to God about what we did with his creation!  And we'll be glad we're forgiven if we've trusted Jesus on that day!

Hebrews 9:27

...people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment...

2. Let's TRUST God's Big Plan for everything!  If we trust and follow Jesus to make us friends with God, then we're part of it!!  He's not done with this place and so we shouldn't be either!  One day he'll make everything new.  This place will be fully healed, restored, mended, renewed, PERFECTED!  No more sickness, suffering or death...

Revelation 21:1-5

Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’

He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’
