Why do people think heaven is in the sky?

People often think of heaven as being "the place up there" and hell as "the place down there" and I guess there's SOME SENSE in thinking GOOD = UP and BAD = DOWN, but is heaven really up in the clouds???

Short answer: No.

And sometimes in art and things, heaven is pictured as being lots of holy people sat on clouds playing harps and singing hymns all day with silly smiles on their faces.  Is that really what it's going to be like?

Again: No.  And thank God for that too!  If that's all heaven was, it sounds absolutely boring and annoying to me!

Thankfully, the Bible's description of God's Big Plan and future for all those who trust him for forgiveness through Jesus is MUCH BIGGER and MUCH BETTER than these pictures.  The Bible says it's even bigger and better than anything we can imagine...

1 Corinthians 2:9

However, as it is written:

‘What no eye has seen,
    what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived’ –
the things God has prepared for those who love him –

It also tells us that this amazing future with God will be SO GOOD that it somehow makes sense of all the suffering that went before it...

Romans 8:18-21

I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

And did you notice in the bit we just read that THIS PLACE gets to be part of it too?!  The more I understand the Bible's teaching about God's Big Plan, the more I'm convinced that Heaven won't be the end of the World!  Rather than scrapping this place and starting again somewhere else, the Bible says God's plan is to

finish what he started,

complete what he began,

restore what was lost,

mend what was broken,

renew what was old,

resurrect what was dead,

beautify what was distorted,

and release what was held captive.

Sounds good doesn't it?

It will be the kind of place we wish this place was.  A world without any sickness, suffering or death...

Revelation 21:1-4

Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’

And WHY will it be SO GOOD???  Because GOD IS SO GOOD and Heaven is all about being WITH GOD FOREVER!  That's been his plan all the way through the Bible from the very beginning.  We are supposed to know the God who made us.  We're supposed to be WITH HIM not without him.  We're supposed to be like him and enjoy him forever.

Can we EARN this?  No.  But God wants to GIVE IT TO US through Jesus.  Everything we need:  forgiveness, friendship with God, life to the full and life forever WITH HIM in a world finally freed from everything the curse of sin has brought on it.

Check out the STONKINGLY brilliant 3rd verse from the Christmas carol 'Joy to the world'...

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King!
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room,
and heav'n and nature sing,
and heav'n and nature sing,
and heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ,
while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat the sounding joy,
repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
far as the curse is found,
far as the curse is found,
far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
and makes the nations prove
the glories of His righteousness
and wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love,
and wonders, wonders of His love.

One day all this is coming true!

Do you want to be part of it?
