How do we know Christianity is right when there are other religions who think they're right too?

Someone once said, "You can have your own opinions but you can't have your own facts."

It means people are free to think and believe whatever they want to (whether they're part of a religion or not).  But it also means not everyone's beliefs can be right at the same time.

If God is REAL, people can be right or wrong about him.  If I say God's the invisible Creator of the Universe and my friend says he's a big flying banana, at least one of us is wrong!

So how can we be sure we're believing the right stuff about God?  How do we know it's not just made up rubbish?  Or just nice ideas?

We only have 2 options when it comes to believing stuff about God...

One is SPECULATION.  This is where people basically guess about God or try to come with ideas that they like the best.  They make stuff up.  Or believe others who've made stuff up.

But the other is REVELATION.  This is where God REVEALS himself somehow.  He shows up and tells us things and leaves plenty of evidence behind that it really happened.

REVELATION is the only real and possible way to know things about God.  Revelation includes Creation, Conscience and Christ...

CREATION

The Bible says the creation we live in and enjoy every day should be an obvious sign that it's been made by an amazing Creator...

Romans 1:20

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

It didn't create itself.  And it didn't happen by accident.  Science is brilliant but it's only possible because God has created a universe that works.  God is revealing that he EXISTS through his creation.

CONSCIENCE

The Bible also says that our consciences are another way we know a little more about the God who made us and how he wants us to live...

Romans 2:14-15

Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.

We feel good when we do good and we feel guilty when we do something wrong.  Why?  Because God has given us a conscience.  God is revealing to us that he is truly and perfectly GOOD and that we need his forgiveness.

CHRIST

And the Bible says that Jesus is God himself turning up in human history.  That's he's "Emmanuel", which means "God with us".  God has SHOWN UP!

Hebrews 1:1-2

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.

Through Jesus, God revealed TONS about who he is, what he's like and about his amazing BIG PLAN for us and everything he has made.

There may well be things that Christians and people of other faiths can agree about.  I agree with Muslims for example, that God is Creator and that he is Good.  But as a Christian I think my friends in other faith groups get Jesus wrong.  They all say Jesus is something good but they all deny that he's God.  And that's where I think they make their biggest mistake.

Jesus said,

John 14:6

'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'

He's either right or wrong.  We can have our own opinions about Jesus but we can't have our own facts.  He can't be GOD and NOT GOD at the same time.

So how can we be sure that Christianity is right when there are other religions who think they're right too?  I think the answer is ultimately JESUS.  Let's take the time to really explore and learn about and listen to Jesus to see if he really is who he claimed to be (God), and to find out if he's really alive today and worth trusting and following.  And let's not be afraid to pray and ask God to help us and show us what's really true as we ask our questions.  I think he wants us to be sure about Jesus and have his love, forgiveness, peace and joy both now and forever.

Happy New Year by the way!  We aren't able to meet monthly for pizza but we'll be doing these weekly blogs and catching up and journeying with friends in lots of other ways.  We love you and we're praying for you.  Let's do 2021 together with Jesus!
